The recurring claim that Ilhan Omar married her brother

You're probably here because of the Oct 2026 rerun. This is the 12th time since 2016 (archive start) this story has run. The previous rerun was Sep 2026.

About this story

Since 2016, a recurring claim has alleged that Rep. Ilhan Omar's second husband, Ahmed Nur Said Elmi (a British citizen she married in 2009), is her brother and that the marriage was immigration fraud. The claim began in an anonymous post on the Somali forum SomaliSpot and was picked up by the conservative blog Power Line in August 2016. Omar has repeatedly denied it, and Snopes rated it "Unfounded." The Star Tribune and PolitiFact could not determine whether the two are related. The claim later came up in Donald Trump's remarks and rallies (2019 and again from late 2025) and in congressional subpoena attempts. In September 2026 it became a Department of Homeland Security investigation. No charges have been announced, and no court finding has been reported.

Oct 2026 – ongoing Ilhan Omar brother-marriage claim, Oct. 12, 2026 – ongoing

Federal reports that DNA had been collected from Omar were described as an effort to show that her 2009 marriage to Ahmed Nur Said Elmi was fraudulent and that the two were siblings. That is the same claim conservatives made, without evidence, during her 2016 race for the Minnesota House. On Oct. 21, MS NOW host Chris Hayes asked Omar directly about the claim. She answered "Not that I, not to my knowledge" and, as IBTimes described it, called the allegation insane. On Oct. 22, Trump said at a rally that "Ilhan Nur Said Elmi" is her "real name" and that she should resign. Her spokesperson said, "This is completely false. Ilhan Omar is her real name." No charges have been announced, and the brother allegation has not been publicly established.

Sep 2026 DHS Secretary Mullin says "We know that she married her brother"

On September 10, 2026, Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin told Benny Johnson, "We know that she married her brother to try to bring him into the United States." He called it an "ongoing investigation" (Newsweek, The Bulwark). The claim is about Omar's 2009 marriage to Ahmed Nur Said Elmi. Newsweek reported that it "gained national attention in 2019" and has never been proven in court, that no federal agency has released findings supporting it, and that Omar has repeatedly denied it. Newsweek also reported that Mullin "did not provide documentary evidence supporting his assertion that Omar married her brother, nor did he identify any charges under consideration." A DHS spokesperson said the department does not comment on ongoing investigations.

Jun 2026 Mace and Omar exchange on X

After placing fifth in South Carolina's June 2026 Republican primary for governor, Rep. Nancy Mace said on X that she was going back to the private sector. Rep. Ilhan Omar replied on June 10: "One-way ticket to where you came from with your name on it, Nancy." Mace answered: "Say what you want about me, but I would never marry my brother." Her official account, @RepNancyMace, posted a similar line that also included a remark about gender. MEAWW reported that the remark pointed to "longstanding allegations surrounding Omar's 2009 marriage to Ahmed Elmi," which Omar has consistently denied. A Snopes fact-check found "no credible evidence that Elmi and Omar were siblings in a fraudulent marriage."

Snopes reported on Feb 28, 2026 that the long-running rumor that Omar married her brother to help him enter the US came back online after the Feb 24 State of the Union, where Omar loudly protested. ABC News confirms that Omar heckled Trump during the speech and that Trump attacked her online the next day. According to Snopes, the rumor first appeared on the Somali forum SomaliSpot and has circulated since 2016 and spread through the conservative blog Power Line. Jan 2026 Rep. Nancy Mace moves to subpoena Omar immigration records at House Oversight hearing

At a January 7, 2026 House Oversight hearing titled "Oversight of Fraud and Misuse of Federal Funds in Minnesota: Part I," Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC) moved to subpoena immigration records for Rep. Ilhan Omar and what Mace called "her brother/husband." During the hearing she asked a witness: "if you marry your brother and you commit immigration fraud, should you be denaturalized and deported?" The committee set the motion aside, or "tabled" it, after several members said the matter belonged to the House Ethics Committee. ANI said the claims Mace cited "have not been proven."

Nov 2025 – Dec 2025 Trump revives the claim in posts and speeches

In a post on Thanksgiving, Nov. 27, 2025, Trump wrote that Omar "probably came into the U.S.A. illegally in that you are not allowed to marry your brother." The White House's Rapid Response 47 account then wrote "Why did you marry your brother." Newsweek reported that Omar's reply had more than 10.2 million views. At the Dec. 9 Pennsylvania speech, Trump said "she married her brother to get in, therefore she's here illegally," and Al Jazeera reported the crowd chanted "Send her back!" Al Jazeera (Dec. 10) reported no verifiable evidence and noted that Omar gave the AP her marriage and divorce records in 2018.

Oct 2019 Trump rally in Minneapolis (Target Center)

At a campaign rally in Minneapolis on Oct. 10, 2019, Trump cited Scott Johnson of Power Line, saying Johnson's sources had told him that "Omar's legal husband was Omar's brother and that she had married him for fraudulent purposes," and added: "You mean like coming into the United States, maybe?" (presidency.ucsb.edu transcript). Omar has called the allegation "disgusting lies" (PolitiFact). PolitiFact had earlier reported that Trump raised the allegation on July 17, 2019, telling reporters "There's a lot of talk about the fact that she was married to her brother" (PolitiFact). The rally was therefore a repeat of the claim by the president, in Omar's own district.

Jul 2019 Trump: "a lot of talk"

On July 17, 2019, a reporter from One America News asked Trump about the claim on the White House South Lawn as he was boarding Marine One He answered: "There's a lot of talk about the fact that she was married to her brother. I know nothing about it." He added that he was sure "somebody" would be looking at it (Star Tribune; Business Insider). The Star Tribune reported that this was the first time the president had publicly discussed the accusation, which Omar "has vehemently denied." The paper's own June 2019 review of the records "could neither conclusively confirm nor rebut" the claim. Its politics editor told PolitiFact on July 18: "whether they are family or not, we can't tell."

Jun 2019 Star Tribune revisits the brother claim after a state campaign-finance probe

On June 6, 2019, the Minnesota Campaign Finance and Public Disclosure Board said Omar and Ahmed Hirsi had filed joint federal tax returns for 2014 and 2015. At that time she was still legally married to Ahmed Nur Said Elmi (AP via MPR). On June 23, 2019, the Star Tribune wrote that new documents from a state agency had "given fresh life to lingering questions" about whether she "once married a man — possibly her own brother — to skirt immigration laws." It added that its records search "could neither conclusively confirm nor rebut the allegation that he is Omar's sibling" (wording as quoted by NewsBusters and Mother Jones). Conservative outlets covered the story that day and the next. Mother Jones noted that the documents "offered nothing to support the claim she had married her brother."

Oct 2018 – ongoing 2018 congressional race — the claim comes back during Omar's U.S. House campaign

On 17 October 2018, the Associated Press reported that Omar, then a Democratic candidate for Congress in Minnesota's 5th District, called claims that she married her brother and committed immigration fraud "disgusting lies." The AP said many of the allegations were first raised by conservative media in 2016. It also said 5th District Republicans had just launched a digital billboard campaign and website highlighting them. In October 2018 the Center for Immigration Studies wrote that she "stands accused" of marriage fraud and bigamy. On 27 October, the Star Tribune reported that local Republicans and conservative media were repeating the 2016 claims, and that Omar had tweeted that they came from "fake journalists on bigoted blogs."

Aug 2016 Claim appears during Omar's Minnesota House race

Ilhan Omar won a three-way DFL primary for Minnesota House District 60B on Aug. 9, 2016. Days later the conservative blog Power Line suggested she was married to both Ahmed Hirsi and Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, and that Elmi could be her brother. MPR reported that the post suggested the marriage was a way to bring him to the U.S. illegally. Her campaign called the allegations "categorically ridiculous and false." On Aug. 17 Omar said she had legally married Elmi, a British citizen, in 2009 and called "absurd and offensive" the suggestion that he was her brother. MinnPost reported that the Star Tribune's review of marriage records found no evidence that Elmi was her brother.
