Aug 2026 Mike Caruso, Palm Beach County clerk and former Florida state representative (Republican), arrested on child sex abuse charges
Mike Caruso served seven years in the Florida House (CBS Miami); a Palm Beach Post photo caption describes "Republican candidate Mike Caruso" winning his House race in 2018. In August 2025, Gov. Ron DeSantis appointed him Palm Beach County clerk of court and comptroller (CBS Miami). On Aug. 18, 2026, Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier announced his arrest on charges of kidnapping, lewd or lascivious molestation, lewd or lascivious exhibition, luring or enticing a child, and child abuse causing mental injury, all involving a minor; the case is handled by the Office of the Statewide Prosecutor (CBS Miami; Palm Beach Post). DeSantis suspended him that day. Florida's Voice reported that he has pleaded not guilty, that the state Republican Party withdrew its support the day he was arrested, and that the Palm Beach County Republican Party's October voter guide named him the Republican nominee for clerk while he was suspended. Status: pending. Caruso has denied the allegations. At his August detention hearing, Circuit Judge James Craner set bail at $160,000. On Oct. 19 the judge refused prosecutors' request to reconsider, and prosecutors have asked the Sixth District Court of Appeal to review the bail decision; the court had not ruled as of the Palm Beach Post's Oct. 22 report. He remains on the Nov. 3 ballot for clerk and comptroller.
